Virgin Australia

Virgin Blue began operating the Brazilian built Embraer E190 on 2 April 2008 when VH-ZPA entered service flying DJ771 Brisbane - Cairns.

Along with the 78 seat E170s, the 104 seat E190s permitted the airline to enter into new markets for which the previous smallest aircraft, the 144 seat Boeing 737-700 were too large.

The E Jets permitted new routes like Sydney - Albury, Melbourne - Mildura, Sydney - Port Macquarie, Perth - Newman and Perth - Karratha to be opened up.

The E190s also operate the Adelaide - Perth route and this enables aircraft to be swapped out at Perth in order to then operate services within Western Australia.

There was an intention for E190s to operate Pacific Blue services within New Zealand and in

2009 whilst on delivery from Brazil VH-ZPM was scheduled to operate a demonstration tour of New Zealand routing Christchurch - Wellington - Auckland - Hamilton - Palmerston North - Invercargill - Christchurch. The aircraft suffered a birdstrike on take off from Palmerston North and the end of the tour was delayed for a couple of days. Though New Zealand domestic services never materialised VH-ZPM was nonetheless delivered in Pacific Blue livery.

In the build up to the launch of Virgin Australia E190s VH-ZPQ and VH-ZPR were delivered in an all-white livery. VH-ZPQ was subsequently fitted with decals for the AFL as part of the marketing deal signed between Virgin Blue and the football league.
